Monthly Moments – Sept.

The weather is finally getting cooler, football season has returned, and we are back into our regularly schedule programming! Fall and Spring our my absolute favorite seasons strictly because of the nice cool breezes and simple charm. I never feel like I’m running around a bunch, no major vacations and no stressful holidays to prepare for. I’m just able to enjoy my day to days with my windows open and have memorable cozy nights.

Eagles Season Opener

Football season is finally back, coming in like the cool fall breeze, putting smiles on everyones face as well as pumping the city full of energy again. Before we actually went out for the game at our usual spot, we all met at my house beforehand to enjoy some charcuterie and yap time. It was such a blast to have an apartment full of my friends, enjoying food, and catching up after our adventurous summers. We did this for like an hour or two and then headed our way over to our spot, where for some reason it was completely packed. We’re happy to see that they are getting good business, but we were there first! However, we were able to still score a table so we can’t complain that much. Of course, like an Eagles game, we were completely left on the edge of our seats with our stomachs twisting. Whats better than also having a stressful game get delayed by the bad weather? Like the Super Bowl champs we are, the game finished up with us beating the Cowboys, yet again!

Kali Uchis Concert

The last concert I went to was the Big Time Rush concert back in July, so I was excited to be able to get to be around people who love music and are there to vibe once again. Kali Uchis is obviously a very different vibe then Big Time Rush, but her show was absolutely gorgeous. She is an artist at work incorporating some incredible messages about femininity and immigration. A bit of background incase you don’t know the absolute talent and beauty of Kali Uchis, she is American born to a Colombian father and American mother, she would often spend her summers in Colombian in the place of her fathers origin to be with extended family. With her background, she blends her music a lot between Spanish and English with an R&B and jazz style. Having listened to her for a few years, you really see the growth and happiness that develops through her albums and has also helped me feel more secure in the person I am and the experiences I go through. Her show was absolutely beautiful, tied in very well to her aesthetic, leaving me with a lasting impression with her important messages and absolute awe in how ethereal she was. We were able to purchase nosebleed tickets for only $30!

Kegs for Cats

Morris has a few major events they do every year and one of them falls in September. Their Kegs for Cats event is a fundraiser that allows them to continue their mission to help the local cat population from becoming to overwhelming in the city. Their initiative, Community Cat Program, allows them to give cat colonies (unowned or outdoor-only cats) the vaccines they need and neuter them to keep them from overpopulating and spreading disease. I did this event last year and was so grateful to get the chance to volunteer and make this event operate smoothly again! Patrons and cat lovers can buy tickets online or in-person and get the general admission option which allows one free drink, six raffle tickets, and one free food item from the participating vendor. Guests also also have the VIP option which gives you a wristband for an open bar for the whole night, one free food item, and an arm length of raffle tickets. The event also had live music, a kitten litter to hold and play with, as well as a wide selection of pinball games to pass the time.

Movies I’ve Watched

This month felt like I was running around a lot, so I didn’t really get a whole lot of time to sit and watch many things. I did however watch a DC Comics animated movie, which if you’ve never watched them they are the peak of DC art. Like most of the animated movies have a consistent timeline as well as a steady rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie I watched, which I really anticipated for, was Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League. It originally came out in March of this year but just recently made its way onto streaming services. What piqued my interest in the movie through all the TikTok edits I saw was the fact that the Bat Family was in it including my favorite Robin, Jason Todd aka Red Hood. What a tragic backstory of such a happy-go-lucky boy, his writers and the fanbase at the time clearly hated him since he stood on business. But that is another lore drop for another time. The movie does start in the middle of some sort of plot development in the series as a whole. Which I was not aware that this movie is actually a sequel to 2018 Batman Ninja. Nonetheless, I didn’t get to lost in the continuation and they actually did a really good job playing catch up to help the viewer understand what is going on. And of course, since the ninja’s and yakuza are so closely tied to Japanese culture, it all takes place in an alternate Japan (because they messed up the timeline) and it really added a cool style to the characters aesthetic to really deep dive into the Japanese culture. So if you’re looking for a fun movie night, with you favorite bat family I would absolutely give this a whirl! They include some pretty incredible characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Flash, and Green Lantern (a way cooler and relatable Green Lantern, might I add).

Shows I’ve Watched

So the shows I watched are switching up a bit, I’m still in the process of Alien: Earth but I want to mostly talk about The Paper. Especially as an avid The Office watcher and fan, I was stoked about this. The best part about these shows is you don’t have to outwardly be racist and ignorant to make a joke (in fact that is how you know you’re NOT funny is when you have to result to that). Now I haven’t finished the series quite yet, I want to take my time with it, I absolutely adore that they were able to take something as so iconic and well-loved like The Office and make it its own entity. Characters are completely different with their own unique and memorable personalities, you have your office romance, but most importantly you have your simple but lovable callback to its predecessor. With that said, if you’re looking for a feel good show with humor and office adventures, I would definetely look into this!

Books I’ve read

Okay, I’m going to try and reel it in as best as I can, this book I read was so beautiful and definitely deserving of a reread and I would love to yap on about it for the rest of this post. I read The House on the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune, who I actually had another book by them by ended up never reading it and getting rid of it. I usually never regret giving up a book but man do I regret that one! But it led me to this beautiful book about identity, discrimination, and finding purpose. The story follows a case worker, Linus Baker, on his top secret assignment to review and report on an orphanage that has six extremely dangerous magical children, including the son of the antichrist himself, Lucy. The Department In Charge of Magical Youth (or commonly referred to as DICOMY) is not only curious about the status of these dangerous children, but also of their house master Arthur Parnassus. After finishing it with happy tears in my eyes, I came to the bittersweet realization that the adventure was over. But you know what’s exciting? There is a sequel!! If you’re looking for a fun cozy book with some love and found family charm, give this a read! I had originally found this book to help me read more about books about finding identity and the meaning of life (like any 20ish year old does) and had it on my reading list for awhile. This inspired me so much and gave me such a lovely past time. Not stressful politics or heart crushing plot twist, only adventure, learning, and loving.

Thank you so much for reading! Have a wonderful day!
