Halloween is finally here! I could not be more excited for everyone to get creative and celebrate together. Halloween just has the most fun aesthetics and activities for friends to do together and it always turns out to be a total blast. So to celebrate us entering the month of wicked and sinister activities, I though I would rank some of my past Halloween costumes. Which is a lot, I go to New York Comic Con around this time so that is an extra costume or two that I put together.
1. Batgirl
Why did I choose this? Because she is my nickname! Back in middle school I had made a decision that would alter the course of my life for the better and help me find one of my long term hyper fixations, Batman and the DC Universe. I was wearing a Batman shirt that I believe came in this like Dark Night dvd bundle or whatever and when I had worn in on a regular 6th grade day, my math teacher caught me in the hallway and called out, “hey Batgirl!” From then on, I would let everyone know my nickname. My math teacher even continued to call me it and I have a couple of school sweatshirts that say Batgirl on the back.
How did I create it? I had originally created the costume for New York Comic Con. I made the batgirl symbol on the belt from some cardboard and painted it yellow and glued it to a black belt I had. And then I painted the symbol on the black jumpsuit I wore, paired with some yellow go-go boots, yellow cape, yellow gloves, and a full face mask all from Amazon (I don’t encourage the use of Amazon, down with Bezo’s).
Was it comfortable? The boots needed to be broken in more, which I discovered when I pulled out the costume in the last few years. But all in all, it was so damn comfortable. Especially if you’re having fun, you don’t really notice the pain in the boots.
Would I wear it again? Absolutely. I’ve actually worn this costume few more times after it’s initial wear at Comic Con a couple years ago. It’s a really great back up costume I have in case I need something last minute. I’ve even made small adjustments overtime to fit better (since I practically made it when I was a teenager) but it is such an easy wear.
2. Robin
Why did I choose this? Well, are we shocked? I obviously have a very serious interest in the Batman universe and it would only be fair to also dress up as Robin.
How did I create it? I bought mostly everything from the bald headed freaks little website as well as thrifted some items and dyed them. So there was a couple pieces. Green shirt, black pants, yellow belt, yellow gloves, yellow cape, corset, and mask. So, the cape, mask, and gloves were already things I had since I would cosplay superheroes a lot at different conventions. The shirt I bought was white and the black pants were both thrifted. I then dyed the shirt green to flow better with the rest of the aesthetic. And then the red corset was bought online, to which I created a Robin emblem and sewed it on. Oh! And topped it off with some regular plain black boots I owned.
Was it comfortable? Ehh, maybe the bottom half. But corsets are pretty notorious for being not made for comfort so I wasn’t surprised.
Would I wear it again? If I opt the sculpted corset for something a little more comfortable! Like a shirt or just a halter top that is flexible.
3. DnD Original Character
Why did I choose this? Cause I’m a fantasy girly and would love nothing more than to be in some romantic, adventured filled fantasy story! So my character Callisto is a lunar witch and has been with me for a couple years at this point. I’ve played DnD games with her, written stories about her, and took her to Comic Con! She is such a fun character to dress up as, especially since she was pretty much developed based on my collector attributes to she is covered in tiny little knickknacks and charms.
How did I create it? Okay so I would love to give all the details but oh wow, she has a lot of stuff. The base has remained pretty consistent though, white peasant dress with a black corset and some additional patterned skirts layered to give more of the Renaissance look. Then I would throw on whatever charm belts I have with my equipment that I bought from Etsy, which I’ll put here and here. Honestly if you’re going for any Renaissance look, thrift your base and accessorize with stuff from Etsy. Cause that cheap crap you get off Amazon will break after the second wear. And if you’re buying Renaissance stuff, you definitely wear these costumes more than once a year.
Was it comfortable? At the Renaissance Faire after a mead or two, yes. For out and about in the Philly city, no. I wouldn’t think this is a going out to a club costume since there’s a lot to it. But things like Comic Con or the Faire are the perfect place to wear something like this. I think if I drop the accessories I would wear it out.
Would I wear it again? Always. This is my girl! And another fun go to. I would also say, it you’re going to a house halloween party you could definitely rock this. I hosted a whole party in it so being a guest would probably be much easier.
4. Fox
Why did I choose this? Cause one of my favorite fantasy characters is always referred to as a fox. And my favorite Five Night’s at Freddy’s character is a fox. So what the hell!
How did I create it? This was a costume I made with Halloween happening in two weeks so I had to work quick. Parts of it include: Ears, jumpsuit, leg warmers, and gloves. I also included a Foxy backpack but that’s because I already had it.
Was it comfortable? Absolutely it was. Any costume that is a jumpsuit and has a zipper in the front is top 3 most comfortable costumes. I can still look fun and creative while also being efficient and comfy.
Would I wear it again? I am going to wear it again! I have a different costume planned for the day of Halloween but if my friends and I go out the weekend before or have some other Halloween celebration, I’ll probably wear it then. It was such a fun costume to make and I felt so confident in it.
5. Phantom Fireworks
Why did I choose this? Okay, so I saw a TikTok post about our first crushes and then our first masked crushes. The earliest I can remember was Will Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean. But then when the masked crush came up it reminded me of the many car rides into Philly while I was growing up. There was always this one billboard sign I was obsessed with because the character on it was really cool, like Batman cool. Then the purple mask came into my mind, it was the Phantom Fireworks mascot.
How did I create it? So I got my cape and jumpsuit from Spirit Halloween and then the yellow fabric I added to create the emblem on on his suit was found in my cosplay chest leftover from something else. Then I took some purple glitter eyeshadow and put it on my face for some extra effect.
Was it comfortable? Hell yes I felt like I had some pjs on. This was the Halloween we went to Dave and Busters which was such a blast I didn’t have to worry about any of my costume falling apart while running around and get to freely play arcade games.
Would I wear it again? Probably. If there was a chill Halloween night or chill Halloween house party I would. Like if it took place during the week or something where I don’t want to do a bunch of setup towards my costume.
6. Pirate
Was it comfortable? Yes! It was kind of like my DnD costume but less corset and less accessories so it was easier to move around and not have to work around the ten different items I had on. It also didn’t require much makeup, I did just like maroon and gold effects around my eyes and created some fake scars which weren’t bothersome.
Would I wear it again? 110% This costume is such a blast, low maintenance, but still gives the I tried really hard for my costume so please enjoy look.
7. Supergirl
Was it comfortable? Yes! I just did a long sleeve with a skort and flats and it was so comfortable to wear this at both Comic Con and Halloween.
Would I wear it again? Definitely! It was a pretty comfy costume and a simple one at that. Another one of those good go to’s especially if you’re blonde, half of the costume is already done. And you don’t even need to go to a special store to put it together you can find a red skirt and blue shirt anywhere. Maybe the cape requires some finessing but even then you could just find some red fabric and call it a day.
8. Shorty
Was it comfortable? No. But this was also my first Spirit Halloween costume set I had bought in my adult years, last time was probably when I was a child.
Would I wear it again? Probably. Maybe if it was just to have that over achiever look for Halloween but I also really do like this character and movie so I would just be excited for people to ask “who are you?” And then I get to spiral about the lore of Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
9. Sleep-Over Barbie
Was it comfortable? Obviously! I was in pj’s I had gotten off of amazon, which I actually got rid of recently just because Amazon stuff is never really made it to last long and all made from plastic so she had to go.
Would I wear it again? As I said, the costume itself is actually one of the first costumes that I had to get rid of just cause it shrunk and was falling apart so probably not!
10. Painter Skeleton
Was it comfortable? Hella. I pretty much had my hair pulled back with a paint brush in it. Then for my outfit I wore black leggings, a black turtle neck, and my smock that I wear when I paint. So it was kind of like everyday clothes but more effort. The middle ground of not wearing any Halloween gear and wearing a onesie and calling it a costume.
Would I wear it again? Yes! If I ever get some sort of in person job and want to wear something in the spirit of it all, I would definitely pull this out again. It kind of gives teacher costume but like fun teacher who does the face paint and really gets into it. Not headband cutesy (but actually boring) teacher.
Thank you so much for reading! Have a wonderful day!
